Twenty-one year old Gaseangwe Balopi was touted as the 2017 queen at the second edition of the prestigious Miss Africa Calabar beauty pageant after a fourth round of appearances in different attires by 32 contestants from around the continent.

The red carpet event was hosted by the government of Nigeria’s Cross River State at the Calabar International Convention Centre on December 27.

Balopi took home $35 000 in cash and a Ford Edge Sport Utility Vehicle as her star prize. She has promised to use her crown to increase awareness on the dangers of illegal migration by youths across Africa.

The beauty pageant, which is the initiative of State Governor, Professor Ben Ayade, is a platform aimed at creating awareness about Cross River State as an ideal tourist destination.

“I am so honoured to have been crowned Miss Africa Calabar 2017 and I thank every single person who voted for me and my family for the support. It has been a great and exciting journey,” Balopi enthused.
