KAGISO KGOTLAETSHO

Heavyweight International Comedy Festival (HICOFEST) will host the 3rd international show at Gaborone Sun Hotel in March 27, this time featuring South African comic Chester Missing, Conrad Koch and Zimbabwe’s funny man Peter Royston.

The event coordinator Gaolatlhe Kediemetse said having successfully hosted the past two annual international shows, they wanted to take the show to another level by bringing the humorous characters of international standards in South Africa’s master of comedy Conrad Koch who is expected to double by conducting the workshop with the locals. The workshop’s mandate is to harden and expose Botswana comedians to the international comedy and introduce them to puppetry which has not been practiced in the country. “We wanted to bring something big for our audience and for our local comedy which is still growing. I believe the presence of Koch at the workshop will add value to the local talent. We believe local comedians can make a living out of comedy like in other countries,” Kediemetse noted.

The event is said to thrill as it features Chester Missing and Conrad. Conrad has never fell short of funny words, with his puppet Chester Missing’s role as a political analyst on Etv and eNCA’s late night news with Loyiso Gola, the combination has been deemed a ‘joke’ before unleashing jokes. With his funny voice and trickery speech, Chester Missing is expected to leave revelers in stitches. The funny jokes and laughter of Conrad has been his comic stronghold. He is also expected to give so much in stand-up comedy.

Although they are not household names locally, Mapuru ‘Cura’ Makara is one of the most sought after comedians in Lesotho while Peter Royston has previously left all corners of Zimbabwe in stitches with the funniest jokes. Local funny men and women will be given a chance to crack jokes. Such comedians include the 2014 President Day winner Oefile ‘Mawee’ Mokgware, 2012 President Days winner Odirile Brooks, Bafana ‘Rib-cracker’ Letsatsi, Kelekwang ‘Rekunde’ Mophaleng and Phenyo ‘Master’ Phaladi.

The Department of Arts and Culture under the Ministry of Youth Sports and Culture (MYSC) pledged at least P50 000 towards the success of the workshop. Koch, the winner of the 2010 entertainer of the year award in South Africa is said to use his 15 years’ experience in the comedy industry to teach local comedian a few tricks. Tickets for HICOFEST are available at Web tickets and Spar outlets at P200 and P300 for double. The show is expected to kick off at 8pm.
