His Excellency Dr. Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi, President of the Republic of Botswana, will participate at the 75th World Health Assembly (WHA75) on 22nd May 2022 and the Annual World Economic Forum (WEF) on 23rd – 25th May 2022.
These Meetings will be held in Geneva and Davos-Klosters, Switzerland, respectively. In addition, on 2nd-3rd June 2022, the President will attend the Stockholm +50 International Meeting in Stockholm, Sweden.
The 75th World Health Assembly, which will be held under the theme: “Health for Peace, Peace for Health;” will address a number of issues that underscore the importance of nurturing a healthy and peaceful global community. In this regard, the Assembly will among others, address the COVID-19 global situation and vaccine inequity; the global plan of action on public health and intellectual property, as well as, sustainable financing for the World Health Organization (WHO). The appointment of the next WHO Director-General will also take place during the 75th World Health Assembly.
On the margins of the WHA75, the President will meet with the WHO Director-General and Batswana residing in Switzerland; as well as, officially open the new Botswana Chancery in Geneva.
At the 2022 Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum, His Excellency the President will participate in a number of High-Level Sessions which will include a Stakeholder Dialogue focusing on Equitable Responses to Ending the Pandemic. The President is also expected to Co-Chair Sessions addressing the African Continental Free Trade and the Role of Africa in a Changing Global Order. This year’s theme for the WEF Annual Meeting is, “History at a Turning Point: Government Policies and Business Strategies.” Furthermore, while in Davos, President Masisi will have High-Level bilateral engagements with strategic partners to explore areas of cooperation in an effort to facilitate trade and investment that contributes to Botswana’s development. Accordingly, the President will meet stakeholders from various sectors including, agriculture; automotive; technology and communications; financial services; and the diamond industry.
Subsequent to his engagements at the 75th World Health Assembly and World Economic Forum; the President will attend the Stockholm +50 International Meeting in Sweden, which will be held under the theme; “A Healthy Planet for the Prosperity of All – Our Responsibility, Our Opportunity.” The Meeting will commemorate fifty years since the inauguration of the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, and will also celebrate five decades of global environment action.
His Excellency the President will be accompanied by Honourable Dr. Lemogang Kwape, Minister of Foreign Affairs; Honourable Dr. Edwin Dikoloti, Minister of Health; Honourable Ms. Philda Kereng, Minister of Environment and Tourism; Honourable Mr. Kabo Gare, Minister of Entrepreneurship and Senior Government Officials. The President and his delegation are expected in Gaborone on 4th June 2022.
