The Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) has raked in over P5 million and new members in one fell swoop in a single weekend. BDP top czars made a multi-million pledge on Friday and Saturday at its Extraordinary Congress to boost the parties’ war chest for the 2019 general election.

Former President of the party and country Ian Khama, longtime treasurer Satar Dada as well as his deputy Jagdish Shah all pledged a sum of P1 million each. The party Secretary General Mpho Balopi and the party’s Womens’ League pledged the sum of P500 000 each.

Meanwhile, President Mokgweetsi Masisi, his deputy, Vice President Slumber Tsogwane as well as Tshekedi Khama all pledged to donate P250 000 each. Construction magnate and BDP’s Ghanzi North legislative candidate, John Thiite together with the party’s’ Mogositshane region pledged P100 000.

Minister for Mineral Resources, Green Technology and Energy Security Eric Molale pledged P60 000. Meanwhile Members of Parliament for Tati East and Tati West Guma Moyo and Biggie Butale both pledged P50 000. The entire donations made in a single weekend totaled a staggering P5 110 000.

It is expected that more donations will be made to the coffers of the ruling party in the months leading up to 2019. Serial party donator, Satar Dada is also expected to continue his election cycle practice of offering the parties 57 constituencies 57 pick-up vans for use in the course of campaigns.

Coupled with other undeclared donations from benefactor businessmen and well-wishers currying influence, dividends from its investments as well as being offered free services the party’s coffers are expected to balloon into tens of millions of Pula by election time.

The Special Congress was the first held by the new administration. The party has cultured the tradition of following elective congresses with special ones since the 2015 Mmadinare elective congress where then then Vice President Mokgweetsi Masisi stamped his authority in the party. The first one was held at Mogoditshane Senior Seconday School.
