Baby girl found dumped in a toilet seat in Letlhakane

Letlhakane police are investigating a case in which a baby girl was found dumped inside a toilet at the primary hospital.

Station Commander, Superintendent Michael Maphephu told Global Post in an interview that the baby girl was found by one of the nurses on Friday morning while reporting for duty. “The baby girl was confirmed dead by the doctor at the same health facility. We suspect that the mother of the baby terminated the pregnancy and dumped the foetus inside the toilet seat,” Maphephu noted.

The police chief pleaded with members of the public to assist with any information that might lead to the arrest of the mother. If arrested, Maphephu indicated that the mother is likely to be charged with concealment of birth. Maphephu explained that this is the second case of baby dumping that they have recorded since the beginning of this year.

Still in Letlhakane, police are investigating an incident in which a 14 year old girl was allegedly raped while walking alone at night in Metsiaela ward. “The suspect allegedly pounced on the young girl and dragged her to the nearby bush and raped her without using protection. After raping the victim, the suspect then fled the scene,” Maphephu explained. He noted that they are yet to arrest the suspect and appealed to members of the public to assist them with any information that might lead to his arrest.

Meanwhile, two brothers aged 26 and 24 years have been arrested in Lethakane charged with the murder of a 32 year old man. According to Maphephu, the duo was involved in a brawl with the victim at one of the drinking holes. The two brothers allegedly stabbed the deceased with a knife and he was admitted at Nyangabgwe referral hospital. “After some few days the victim succumbed to his injuries and we have since charged the siblings for causing his death,” he revealed. The station commander appealed to residents of Letlhakane to desist from abusing alcohol which he said lead some of them to committing such horrendous criminal activities.
