The Coca-Cola Foundation has availed US$ 50,000 (approximately P585 622.00) in support of vulnerable communities in the Kweneng West District.

The Foundation chose to channel its donation through Botswana Red Cross Society, leveraging on its unique access to people and communities, which consist of 10,000 volunteers countywide.

According to Botswana Red Cross Secretary General, Kutlwano Mukokomani, the initiative is expected to benefit over 500 vulnerable people with food, hygiene packs and water supply.

The gesture is expected to cushion Kweneng District from the biting effects of COVID-19 impacts on its communities.

Mukokomani said the assistance package is expected to mitigate food security, water and hygiene commodities challenges at household level for the people in Kweneng West.

“The hygiene packages will enhance the ability of vulnerable populations to comply with critical preventative hygiene protocols such as regular hand washing with soap and keeping clean households,” said Botswana Red Cross Secretary General, Kutlwano Mukokomani.

Mukokomani said the food and hygiene packages are expected to be distributed to 100 households, with an average of five people, over a period of two months.

Meanwhile since its formation in  1968 as auxiliary to government, the Botswana Red Cross Society has a distinctive asset in its approach to projects which are community based, using volunteers who come from the same communities, speak the same language and understand the culture, religions, and dynamics of their communities.

The Society is known to cut across diverse developmental issues, health, disaster management, first aid training, rehabilitation and social services and have gained legitimacy and trust among the communities.
